When I was a little girl, I spent every spare minute I had inside a book. My home was noisy and chaotic—and often scary. I longed for a different world. I loved The Chronicles of Narnia. I read every Nancy Drew book I could get my hands on. Does anyone else remember those? How about The Secret Garden or Island of the Blue Dolphins? Then I moved on to more magical stories…because I needed more magic. The Hobbit. The Lord of the Rings. C. S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Those stories carried me through high school and toward the hope that soon, I would be out on my own. I thought growing up would mean far less need to read and escape. We can all laugh at that now. Adulthood brought challenges of its own, and once again, reading brought me peace. Stories reminded me that no matter how dark life became, there was still courage, goodness, faith—and a little magic—to be found. I wrote the Legend of Inheritance series quickly. The story simply came to me, and once it began, it wouldn’t let me go. I'm writing to you from the front lines this year. I hope you get this before the holiday season ends. I'm never sure whether I'll have time to send it. It's been that kind of battle of late. Not enough soldiers, and definitely not enough generals at the top to send reinforcements.
